Ubatuba Granite
Ubatuba granite is a dark granite which has speckles throughout the slab. The colouring of Ubatuba can vary dependent on the slab which is quarried. The background of this slab is most commonly a dark green but can also be almost completely black. Most slabs will look black from a distance, with the dark green becoming more evident as you get closer (you can see this by comparing the slab below with the close up above).
The speckles across this granite are feldspar crystals which can be gold, brown or green in colour. The colouring of these feldspar crystals is because of the presence of green orthopyroxene1 minerals. In the variety of this granite known as ‘Green Ubatuba’ there can also be white speckles present (despite the name 'Green Ubatuba' has a black background).
Ubatuba is an uncommon type of rock which is known as a charnockite. This type of rock from the Precambrian period is so highly metamorphosed they have literally completely melted and become igneous rocks.
Originally this granite was quarried in the Brazilian coastal town of Ubatuba2 (hence the name). This original quarry site is now exhausted and excavations take place in surrounding areas between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as well as in the State of Espírito Santo.
Ubatuba Granite is used in one of the world’s most famous statues. The plinth of the legendary 'Christ the Redeemer' statue3 overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro is built in Ubatuba granite.
This durable attractive granite can also be seen in applied in several settings across the world including both cladding and flooring for commercial buildings. Perhaps the most well-known use of this stone is for granite worktops in private residences. This granite can be seen in many kitchens across America, the UK and Europe.
Ubatuba is also a great choice of material for stone coffee tables and dining tables. This material combines beautifully with the solid woods with a personal favour of ours being walnut. If you are looking for a dark green granite for your luxury furniture Ubatuba is one of the best materials you could choose.
As you can see in the image below Ubatuba granite brings luxury, warmth and a natural feel to the area. This combined with the stones durability make it one the most popular green granites in the world.
