What is Travertine?
Travertine is amongst the most popular decorative stones in the world. It can be found used on both internal and external applications. Externally the most famous use of travertine has been for the construction of the legendary Roman Colosseum. Internally you can see the use of this stone in both tiles and luxury furniture.
Geologically this stone is a non-clastic deposit of calcium carbonate which has precipitated from supersaturated water. This can occur in limestone caves to form stalagmites and stalactites or by hot springs where bacterial action may also be an agent. The cream Italian travertine (commonly referred to as Classic Roman) found in Tivoli and Persian Red from Iran are examples of travertine deposits formed by hot springs.
Although this stone is often referred to as 'travertine marble', this is incorrect, it is not a marble. For more information about this material by clicking on the following link- Travertine: Everything you Need to Know

How Is The Surface of A Travertine Top Dining Table Finished?
The surface of travertine when quarried contains very small pit holes. The reason for this is because of gas bubbles and plant deposits when it was formed. Before polishing these holes are filled with an epoxy resin or cement. Most of our tables will be filled with a cement to match the colour of the material.
Most of the time the surface of a stone table will be polished. However, some tables will also be available in a honed finish. A honed finish is where the stone slab is not polished at such a high pressure, this gives a more matte finish. Neither finish is superior to the other, it comes down to the personal preference you have for your table.
The edges of each table will come with a pencil round finish. A pencil round finish is where a 3mm radius is created on the top and the bottom of the exposed edge. The reason for this finish is to take the sharpness off the edges.
